SUMMARY: The main subject of this bachelor’s thesis is the national identity and its’ preservation through music in another cultural environment at the example of Estonian community in Ireland. Based on my personal experience with the diasporas of Estonians living in Denmark and Ireland, I realised that many of them, living in another culture, still value their national identity through various activities, many of them being related to music.

The purpose of this thesis is to research how Estonians maintain their national identity through music while living in Ireland. The main question was how big the role of music in the preservation of national identity according to the Estonians living in Ireland is. My main focus on the research was based on the questions: 1) Whether or not and how do Estonians maintain their national identity in Ireland? 2) How much do Estonians in Ireland value musical activities related to their nationality?

The method used to collect the data and to answer these questions was a survey research. I conducted a survey from 10.04.2016- 16.04.2016 among 72 Estonians, who live or have lived in Ireland.

The data revealed that Estonians really value activities and time spent with other people from their ethnic group. As the majority values the importance of Estonian languge, the importance of music is also really highly rated. Many of the surveyed felt proud of the classical musicians from Estonia and feel connected to the Estonians living in their homeland whenever they recall the music-related memories or hear the pieces of music created by other Estonians. Estonian music was rated as ’important’ by 91% of the participants, the favorite memory related to Estonian music being related to the Song Festival or with the concerts of people from Estonia. Nevertheless, less than half of them come to celebrate the festival nowadays. The music lesson in the Estonian school in Ireland is valued to be an important part of the preservation of the national identity of the respondents’ children. All in all, the role of music in the preservation of national identity is highly valued and plays a big part in the repondents’ life.
